About the data

GlobalSignal is an independent dashboard inspired by the map-and-panel format of global monitoring tools. It is not affiliated with World Monitor, USGS, EMSC, NASA, GDACS, the global VAAC network, Google News, UCDP, the World Bank, ADSB.lol, EarthCam, or SkylineWebcams.

Earthquakes

The USGS GeoJSON feed supplies worldwide earthquake reports for the past 30 days. The period selector filters earthquakes to 1 hour, 6 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, 7 days, or 30 days; it does not change the natural-event window. Locations, magnitudes, and times can be revised.

EMSC SeismicPortal supplies European reports under CC BY 4.0. Europe uses a bounding box of 34–72° N and 25° W–45° E, including parts of the Mediterranean and neighbouring regions. When available, EMSC replaces USGS within this box to avoid counting two catalogues’ reports of the same event. If EMSC fails, the map falls back to USGS, with reduced small-earthquake coverage. Queries return up to 20,000 EMSC records, and the connection panel flags this limit if reached. These catalogues are not a complete record of every earthquake.

Natural events

NASA EONET supplies curated worldwide reports, including Europe. We load open and closed events from a 90-day query without a 200-event limit, plus the open volcano catalogue. Choose 30 or 90 days by the latest mapped observation. Open volcano reports remain visible regardless of age so long-running reports are not lost. Their observation dates are shown; “open” does not confirm that an eruption is happening now.

Wildfires, severe storms, volcanoes, and floods have separate layers. Other natural events include drought, landslides, dust and haze, snow and ice, temperature extremes, and water changes when the source supplies them. Storm reports are curated events, not a live weather radar or a complete inventory of local storms. NASA earthquake and manmade categories are excluded from the natural-event layer.

A report appears once even if both queries return it. Point reports use their latest location; polygon reports use an approximate area centre. “Closed report” means the source has marked it ended; “open in source” may reflect an older entry. An empty region means no matching reports in this catalogue, not that no events occurred.

Rapid volcano alerts: GlobalSignal uses the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS) dedicated volcano GeoJSON feed for fast volcano awareness, with the GDACS live map endpoint as a fallback. GDACS states that it monitors Volcanic Ash Advisories from the VAAC network daily and combines those signals with Smithsonian volcanic-activity reporting. When the GDACS event metadata includes ash height or flight-level information, GlobalSignal surfaces it. This layer is for situational awareness only and must not be used for operational flight planning.

Situational overlays

The Global activity scan groups recent reports geographically and weights stronger or higher-impact event categories more heavily. It is a local activity index for orientation only, not a risk score, forecast, warning, or emergency alert.

The day/night layer is calculated locally from the current UTC time and does not use an external feed. Strategic chokepoints are fixed geographic reference points for map context; they do not indicate disruption or closure.

Conflict & news

Google News supplies the rolling headline search used by the Global News panel. Topic tabs are keyword searches over recent reporting; headlines open through the Google News result link and remain subject to the original publisher’s terms.

The Conflict Watch map uses the UCDP Candidate Events Dataset, a monthly global release of georeferenced organized-violence events. GlobalSignal currently uses version 26.0.7 (July 2026) and clusters nearby events for map readability. UCDP Candidate is research data with publication lag; markers are not live front lines, territorial-control boundaries, or emergency alerts. UCDP datasets are distributed under CC BY 4.0 with source citation requirements.

Country instability baseline

The ranking uses the latest available World Bank Worldwide Governance Indicators Political Stability estimate. GlobalSignal sorts countries from lower to higher estimates and converts the position into a relative 0–100 percentile for easier comparison. That percentile is a GlobalSignal display calculation, not an official World Bank risk score, and the underlying indicator is annual rather than real-time.

Live military aviation

The Aviation Watch layer uses the public ADSB.lol API (data licensed under ODbL 1.0) and its military-aircraft endpoint. GlobalSignal displays aircraft currently tagged as military by that provider, using publicly received ADS-B/MLAT positions when coordinates are available. Aircraft can disappear because of receiver coverage, transponder settings, filtering, stale positions, or other technical limitations. The military tag is provider metadata and should not be treated as an official classification. Positions refresh about once per minute while this page is open. Emergency highlighting is based only on the provider emergency field or standard 7500/7600/7700 squawk codes present in the returned military feed. GlobalSignal does not infer missions, destinations, intent, weapons, or operational status.

Private / business aviation

The Business Jets mode uses the same public ADSB.lol network and a practical type-based cohort of common business-jet families including Citation, Gulfstream, Global, Challenger, Falcon, Phenom, Learjet, PC-24, Hawker and HondaJet types. This is an aircraft-type heuristic similar to public aviation anomaly monitors; it is not proof that an aircraft is privately owned or that a particular person is aboard. GlobalSignal does not look up owners, passengers, destinations, or trip purpose. Coverage and positions have the same ADS-B/MLAT limitations as military mode.

Live webcams

Webcam pins and cards are a curated directory of public live-camera pages from EarthCam and SkylineWebcams. Feeds open on the provider website because availability, embedding rights, ads, and stream status are controlled by the provider. A camera pin does not imply an incident is occurring nearby.

Local weather

When you choose “Use my location,” your browser supplies an approximate device location and GlobalSignal requests current conditions and a short forecast from Open-Meteo. Coordinates are rounded before the weather request and are not stored by GlobalSignal. Location access is optional, can be stopped from the weather panel, and is not included in GlobalSignal source-health totals.

Global activity level

The Global activity level adapts the idea of an anomaly-based early-warning dial to GlobalSignal's public hazard feeds. It compares a weighted score for the latest rolling 24 hours with the previous 28 rolling 24-hour windows. Only earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher contribute to this anomaly score; natural-event categories use fixed display weights. The baseline mean and spread are calculated locally in your browser from the data already loaded by GlobalSignal. Levels 1–5 indicate how unusual the current public-reporting activity is relative to that short baseline. They are not emergency levels, threat assessments, forecasts, or evidence that a major event is imminent.

The level-history log and local Level 4+ browser alert setting are stored only on your device. That local anomaly alert runs while the GlobalSignal page is open. When the optional background-push service is configured and a visitor opts in, standards-based Web Push through OneSignal can deliver selected major earthquake, volcano, and GlobalSignal breaking notices even when the dashboard is closed. On iPhone and iPad, GlobalSignal must be installed to the Home Screen before Web Push can be enabled.

Updates & limitations

Resilient startup cache: GlobalSignal stores the last-known good normalized hazard, conflict, and country-baseline data locally in your browser using IndexedDB. On a later visit, that cached state can appear immediately while fresh public feeds reconnect. Cached sources are explicitly labelled “Cached” with their age and are replaced as soon as a live response succeeds. Live aircraft positions are intentionally not restored from this cache because stale positions could be misleading.

Map clustering, local correlators & viewport exports: Dense hazard and UCDP conflict pins are grouped client-side by adaptive geohash precision at lower map zooms and expand as you zoom in. The optional analytical correlator compares live military-tagged ADS-B squawk 7700 positions with active GDACS Orange/Red volcano alerts inside a user-selected radius and can issue a local browser notification on a new entry while the app is open. This is a co-occurrence rule only, not mission or intent analysis. CSV and GeoJSON exports can be restricted to the active map bounds; this reduces the exported file to points already loaded inside the visible viewport and does not reduce upstream feed download volume.

Hazard feeds and the rapid GDACS volcano watch refresh every five minutes while open; military aviation refreshes about once per minute and the business-jet cohort about every two minutes; Google News refreshes every fifteen minutes; the cached UCDP Candidate snapshot is checked periodically, and the annual World Bank baseline is refreshed every six hours. The dashboard shows errors and retains previously loaded data when a refresh fails. Earthquake summary cards cover the selected time period globally; natural-event cards cover the selected 30- or 90-day EONET observation window plus open volcano reports and recent GDACS volcano alerts. The map and event stream follow your filters. No simulated events are added to the source feeds; the separate activity scan is a locally computed orientation aid described above.

This edition also includes local saved monitors, shareable view links, activity tracking, situation snapshots, CSV/GeoJSON export, Google News headlines and UCDP Candidate conflict-event clusters, a World Bank instability baseline, and curated public webcam links. It includes public-source military aviation and type-based business-jet positions, but does not include aircraft-owner/passenger identification, shipping, full commercial-flight tracking, proprietary intelligence feeds, mission inference, or AI-generated analysis.

Map data: OpenStreetMap. Tiles: OpenStreetMap. An internet connection is required for map tiles and feeds. Public feeds are requested through a same-origin GlobalSignal gateway when available, with direct-provider fallback.
